Save money and eat healthier by making your own granola at home. Granola can be served for breakfast or as simple and healthy snack. Try it with milk or vanilla yogurt.

Ingredients

  • 10 cups large flake oats
  • 4 cups unsweetened flake coconut
  • 1 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 cup hazelnuts
  • 1 cup pecan halves
  • 2 cups pumpkin seeds
  • 2 cups dried cranberries
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup honey
  • Zest from one large orange

What to Do

  1. Pour the oats into a large bowl. Add the coconut, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, cranberries, brown sugar, and orange zest. Mix together and set to one side.
  2. In a saucepan, over medium heat, melt the butter and honey together.
  3. Pour the butter and honey mixture into the large bowl with your oats and nuts. Mix until evenly coated.
  4. Spread the mixture out on baking sheets in a 2 inch layer.
  5. Bake at 300 degrees for 20 minutes. Granola is done when it is golden-brown and crunchy.
  6. Store in a large jar or container with a lid.

Tips

  • Make sure you use a large enough bowl. You want to have lots of room to mix your ingredients without spilling.
  • Use a baking sheet with raised sides. This will make it much easier to take your granola out of the oven.
  • Experiment with different types of nuts. Try walnuts or macadamia nuts. The combinations are endless!
  • Try another dried fruit in place of the cranberries. Raisins or dried apples are a great option. Or try adding fresh fruit such as blueberries and strawberries to your bowl when you eat your granola.
